Why Study Communication?

There are several good reasons for choosing COMM as a major. Here are just a few, courtesy of Dr. Joel Iverson:

1. Communication skills are highly valued. As one of the most desirable qualities in a job candidate, communication skills are a very important asset that you can develop as a major.

2. You will possess communication knowledge. Apart from communication skills, you have substantial knowledge about the nature of human communication. Knowing about human communication provides you with a knowledge base which can be valuable in any job or career.

3. You will possess problem-solving/research skills. Although technical knowledge can help in a specific job, the specific knowledge needed can varies from job to job and can change very rapidly. Instead of hoping that the specific knowledge from your degree remains relevant, you have the skills to critically analyze a problem, research possible answers, evaluate that information, and report your findings in a usable manner. In a fast-changing world these are invaluable skills.
