Linguistics Minor

Linguistics Minor, UM Course Catalog

To earn a Minor in Linguistics, students must complete 18 credits beyond their major degree requirements, as follows:

Basic Core Courses (3 credits)

All students must take the following course:

  • LING 470 - Linguistic Analysis (3 credits)

Additional Core Courses (6 credits)

Students must take 2 of the 3 courses listed below:

  • LING 471 - Phonetics and Phonology (3 credits)
  • LING 472 - Generative Syntax (3 credits)
  • LING 489 - Morphology (3 credits)

Elective Courses (9 credits)

Students must take 3 courses from among the following:

  • LING 270S* - Introduction to Linguistics (3 credits)
  • LING 375X - Endangered Languages (3 credits)
  • LING 465* - History and Structure of English (3 credits)
  • LING 466 - Pedagogical Grammar (3 credits)
  • LING 471** - Phonetics and Phonology (3 credits)
  • LING 472** - Generative Syntax (3 credits)
  • LING 473 - Language and Culture (3 credits)
  • LING 474 - Historical Linguistics (3 credits)
  • LING 475 - Linguistic Field Methods (3 credits)
  • LING 477 - Bilingualism (3 credits)
  • LING 478 - Second Language Development (3 credits)
  • LING 484 - North American Indigenous Languages and Linguistics (3 credits)
  • LING 489** - Morphology (3 credits)

*  Cannot be taken after LING 470. In addition, only one of LING 270S and LING 465 may be counted towards the minor.
** May be taken as an elective, if not taken as a required core course.
