Options in Linguistics

Anthropology Majors

To earn an Option in Linguistics with an Anthropology major, students must complete 12 credits beyond their major degree requirements, as follows:

Students must take the following 2 courses:

  • LING 470 - Introduction to Linguistics (3 credits)
  • LING 473 - Language and Culture (3 credits)

Students must take 2 of the following courses listed below:

  • LING 375 - Endangered Languages (3 credits)
  • LING 471 - Phonetics and Phonology (3 credits)
  • LING 472 - Generative Syntax (3 credits)
  • LING 474 - Historical Linguistics (3 credits)
  • LING 475 - Linguistic Field Methods (3 credits)
  • LING 477 - Bilingualism (3 credits)
  • LING 478 - Second Language Development (3 credits)
  • LING 484 - North American Indigenous Languages and Linguistics (3 credits)
  • LING 489 - Morphology (3 credits)

General Linguistics Advising Track (27 credits)

Students must take the following 7 courses:

French Majors

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages offers a French major with a Linguistics Option. To earn an Option in Linguistics with a French major, students must complete 18 credits of Linguistics courses as follows*:

Students must take 1 of the following 2 courses (3 cr.):

  • LING 270S - Intro to Linguistics
  • LING 470 - Linguistics Analysis

Students must the following 2 courses (6 cr.):

  • LING 471 - Phonetics and Phonology
  • LING 473 - Language and Culture

Students must take 3 additional Linguistis courses (9 cr.)
