Government Agencies

Montana Department of Environmental Equality:  The Department of Environmental Quality's mission is to protect, sustain, and improve a clean and healthful environment to benefit present and future generations.  DEQ is responsible for enforcing the Clean Water Act:  determining whether a stream is healthy and restoring it if it is not.  To contact the DEQ, write to Montana Department of Environmental Quality, P.O. Box 200901  Helena, MT 59620-0901 or visit their home page via our links page.

Montana Conservation Districts:  Conservation districts are units of local government designed to help citizens conserve their soil, water, and other renewable natural resources.  See our links page for more information.  Conservation Districts are responsible for the 310 permits discussed in the permits section.

United States Forest Service:  Forest Service policy is to restore and maintain healthy watersheds for use by current and future generations. They will give watershed protection and ecological restoration the highest priority in decision-making processes, including budget and program planning, land management planning, project implementation, and watershed assessments for forest and interagency plans. This policy is built on the premise that they simply cannot meet the needs of people without first securing the health of our lands and water.  For more information, see our links page.
